Walk into Ler Devagar bookshop at 11am on a Wednesday. The 4-storey converted printing press has tens of thousands of books, a vintage Heidelberg printing press as the centrepiece, a flying-bicycle sculpture overhead, and a small upstairs bar pouring espresso for €1.20. Almost no one is there mid-week morning. By Sunday afternoon it is hip-deep in tourists.
LX Factory is what happened when Lisbon let an old industrial site rot just long enough for the artists, designers and bakers to move in for the cheap rent. The 23,000 m² complex of red-brick weaving sheds and steel-framed printing halls in Alcântara opened to creatives in 2008. It is now one of the most amazing creative quarters in southern Europe.
Casa Almada sits in the Old Town across the city, but LX Factory is genuinely worth the 15-minute Bolt for an afternoon. This is the local guide to using it well — what the standout buildings are, what to actually do there, and which days are worth the trip.
A short history of the site
The buildings date to 1846 and started life as the Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Lisbonense — one of the first industrial textile factories in Portugal. The site weaved cotton through the late 19th century, then printed newspapers and magazines through most of the 20th century, before falling into disuse in the 1990s.
In 2008, the property company Mainside opened the complex to creatives at low rents. Designers, photographers, architects, restaurants and bookshops moved in. The Sunday flea market started in 2009. By 2015 LX Factory was firmly on the international design-tourism map.
The 23,000 m² site sits directly underneath the iron arches of the Ponte 25 de Abril (the 1966 suspension bridge, often compared to the San Francisco Golden Gate). The bridge framing the buildings is the visual signature of the place.

What to actually do — bookshops, design and street art
Ler Devagar is the headline bookshop. 4 storeys, around 50,000 titles in Portuguese, English, French and Spanish, a vintage Heidelberg printing press as the central installation, and a flying-bicycle sculpture by artist Pietro Proserpio suspended overhead. Open Mon-Fri 10am-10pm, Sat-Sun 11am-1am. The small mezzanine bar pours espresso for €1.20.
Embaixada LX is the design and fashion concept store on the upper level — Portuguese designers, ceramics, jewellery, leather goods. Worth 30 minutes for the curation.
For street art, walk the entire main alley and the side passages. Murals turn over every few months as new artists are commissioned. The 25 de Abril bridge graffiti, the Bordalo II trash-rabbit on the eastern wall, and the rotating Vhils carved-portraits are all worth a slow look.
Eating, drinking and the Sunday market
For lunch, 1300 Taberna does Portuguese petiscos — bacalhau croquetes, presunto, octopus salad — at €25-€35 a head. Cantina LX opens early for breakfast and brunch. The Therapist and Rio Maravilha are the rooftop bars with views to the bridge and the river — open from 5pm.
For dinner, A Praça on the upper terrace does Portuguese fusion at €40-€60 per head. Malaca Too does Malaysian street food at €18-€25.
The Sunday market (LX Market) runs every Sunday 10am-7pm with around 60 stalls — handmade ceramics, vintage clothes, secondhand books, Portuguese designers, and food trucks parked along the main alley. This is the day with the most amazing energy. It is also the day with the biggest crowds — go before noon if you want to actually browse.

Practical visit info from Casa Almada
From Casa Almada, the easiest route is a 15-minute Bolt or Uber from the Old Town to LX Factory main entrance on Rua Rodrigues Faria 103. €8-€12 each way.
On public transport: walk down to Praça do Comércio (12 min), take Tram 15 to LX Factory (25 minutes), or take the metro to Alcântara then walk 8 minutes. Total around 45 minutes.
Hours: The site itself is open daily, free to walk around. Individual shops, bookshops and bars set their own hours — most are open 11am-8pm Mon-Sat with shorter Sunday hours, plus the late-night bars 5pm-2am.
Best days to visit: Sunday for the market and the energy; Tuesday-Thursday afternoon for the calmest exploration of the bookshops and design stores.
