TLDR: Lisbon to the Algarve is 280 km south. Five travel options: Alfa Pendular train to Faro (3 hours, €25-€45, the easy default), Intercidades train (3h30, €22-€35), FlixBus or Rede Expressos coach (3h30, €15-€30), hire car (2h30 via A2 motorway, ~€80 for fuel and tolls one way), and flying TAP (45 min air, 3 hours door-to-door, rarely worth it). Best Algarve towns: Faro, Tavira, Lagos, Sagres.

Insider tip from Casa Almada

Take the 8.10am Alfa Pendular from Oriente direct to Faro. You arrive at 11.10am, walk straight onto a Eva bus connection to Tavira (45 min, €4) or Lagos (1h45, €10), and you are eating lunch by the beach by 1pm. Skip the Lisbon-to-Algarve flight unless you have a Ryanair €25 promo — door-to-door is the same time as the train and the train is €15 cheaper.

The Algarve is Portugal’s southern coast, 280 km south of Lisbon, and the most popular domestic holiday region in the country. White-sand beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs, fishing villages turned resort towns, and the warmest sea temperatures in mainland Portugal. From Lisbon it is genuinely doable as either a long weekend break or a side trip on a longer Portugal stay.

Casa Almada sits in the Old Town near the Cais do Sodré transport links to the south. This is the local guide for our guests on every option to reach the Algarve, what each one costs, and where to actually go once you arrive.

Train: the easy default

Alfa Pendular train at Lisbon Oriente
The Alfa Pendular Lisbon-Faro: 3 hours, €25-€45 with promo fares.

Alfa Pendular (AP) is the high-speed train from Lisbon Oriente direct to Faro. 3 hours each way, runs hourly between 6am and 9pm. Promo fares from €25 booked 5+ days ahead, standard €40-€45. First class €55-€65. Free Wi-Fi, power outlets, café-bar.

Intercidades (IC) is the slower long-distance express on the same Lisbon-Faro line. 3h30, €22-€35. Worth the €10 saving if you have a flexible day.

From Faro, regional trains and Eva buses fan out east to Tavira (45 min, €4) and west to Lagos (1h45 train, €10). The line stops at almost every Algarve town.

From Casa Almada, the easiest way to Oriente is the green metro line: walk 7 min to Baixa-Chiado, ride 3 stops to Alameda, switch to the red line, ride 1 stop to Oriente. Total 25-30 min door to platform. Or take a Bolt direct (15 min, €10-€15).

Bus, hire car and the flying option

FlixBus and Rede Expressos run frequent coaches from Sete Rios bus terminal direct to Faro, Lagos, Albufeira and Portimão. Journey time 3h-3h30, €15-€30 each way. Coaches are air-conditioned with Wi-Fi and power outlets — comfortable enough.

Hire car is the right call if you plan to bounce between several Algarve towns. The drive on the A2 motorway takes 2h30 to Faro, 3h to Lagos, 3h30 to Sagres. Fuel ~€40, tolls ~€25, total ~€65 each way. Plus €40-€60 a day for the car. Sixt, Europcar and Auto Jardim all offer Lisbon Oriente or airport pick-up.

Flying: TAP runs Lisbon-Faro at 45 min flight time, but airport transfers each side push the door-to-door to 3 hours. Fares €60-€150. Only worth it for very specific connections — rarely a sensible choice for the Algarve trip itself.

Where to actually go in the Algarve

Tavira whitewashed town in the Algarve
Tavira: the prettiest unspoilt town in the Algarve. 45 min east of Faro by bus.

Faro is the regional capital and main transport hub. Pretty walled old town, the Sé Cathedral, the Igreja do Carmo with its bone-walled chapel, and the Ria Formosa lagoon park with boat trips to barrier-island beaches. Worth a half-day rather than a base.

Tavira 30 km east of Faro is the prettiest unspoilt town in the Algarve. Whitewashed houses, the Roman bridge over the Gilão river, the Câmara Obscura tower, and barrier-island beaches reached by ferry from Quatro Águas. The right base for a slower 3-night trip.

Lagos 80 km west of Faro is the central Algarve resort with the famous limestone cliff beaches — Praia da Marinha, Praia do Camilo, Ponta da Piedade. Busier and more developed than Tavira, more variety of restaurants and bars.

Sagres 50 km past Lagos is the windswept south-western tip — the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse, the Fortaleza de Sagres where Henry the Navigator allegedly ran his famous nautical school, and the wild Atlantic surf beaches. Worth a day from Lagos.

How long to spend and best months

Limestone cliffs at Praia da Marinha in the Algarve
Praia da Marinha: the headline Algarve beach. 2h45 from Lisbon by train and bus.

For a weekend break from Lisbon, train down on Friday morning, two nights in Tavira or Lagos, train back Sunday evening. Full 48 hours on the coast.

For a longer Algarve add-on, 4-5 nights lets you see Tavira, Lagos and Sagres without rushing. Hire car becomes useful at this length to bounce between towns.

Best months are May, June and September. Sea temperature 19-22°C, daytime 22-28°C, the resort towns are not yet at peak August density. July-August are amazing for swimming (sea 22-24°C) but the resort towns are at full crowd. October-April work for the inland towns and the cliff walks but the sea is too cold for most swimmers.

For families with children, May half-term and September half-term are the right windows — warm enough to swim, calm enough to find restaurant tables, and the cliff-walks at Lagos and Sagres are at their most amazing without the August haze.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Lisbon to the Algarve?

The Alfa Pendular train from Lisbon Oriente direct to Faro is the easy default — 3 hours, €25-€45 with promo fares booked ahead. Coaches from Sete Rios are slightly cheaper at €15-€30. Hire car makes sense if you plan multiple Algarve stops. Flights are rarely worth it.

How long is the train from Lisbon to Faro?

3 hours on the Alfa Pendular, 3h30 on the slower Intercidades. Both run hourly between 6am and 9pm from Lisbon Oriente. Both have free Wi-Fi, reserved seating and a café-bar onboard.

What is the best Algarve town to visit from Lisbon?

For a first-time visitor, Tavira (the prettiest unspoilt town, 45 min east of Faro) or Lagos (the limestone cliff beaches, 1h45 west of Faro). Faro itself is worth a half-day rather than a stay. Sagres is the right detour from Lagos for the Cabo de São Vicente lighthouse and the wild surf beaches.

Can you do the Algarve as a day trip from Lisbon?

Possible but not advisable. The 3-hour train each way leaves only 4-5 hours on the coast. Better to make it a 2-3 night trip — train down Friday morning, train back Sunday evening — and stay in Tavira or Lagos.

When is the best time to visit the Algarve?

May, June and September. Sea temperature 19-22°C, daytime 22-28°C, resort towns not yet at peak August crowd. July-August are at their warmest (sea 22-24°C, daytime 28-32°C) but expect full crowds. October-April are calmer but the sea is too cold for most swimmers.
